Canada Foundation for Innovation awards $552 Million in Global Innovation Funds To Canadian Universities, Hospitals & Research Groups

British Columbian univresities accounted for 75 Million fundings for continuing research projects 

Canada Foundation for Innovation (Mar 13, 2026) (Sherbrooke, Quebec): Canada Foundation for Inovation (CFI) declared the list of Universities receiving the funds for the research projects across Canada. In this annoucement, University of British Columbia received $50 million (approx.), University of Victoria received $15 million, Simon Fraser University received $12 million were the Top British Columbian Universities who received funds for the ongoing and soon to be starting projects. 

The annoucement made by Karim Bardeesy (Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of Industry) on behalf of Hon. Mèlanie Joly (Minister of Industry & Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions) announcing 92 research infrastructure projects at 32 higher education institutions in Canada. The total investment of $552 million includes the Infrastructure Operating Fund (IOF) $127 million as well.

Amongst the receiving institutions is Univerity of Victoria (UVic) which has reportedly received 15 million (including IOF) for funding four of its major research projects that includes equipment and instrument upgrades to advance research releated to medical imaging, climate change, and the deep-sea floor. 

Lisa Kalynchuk (UVic Vice-President of Research & Innovation) said, "These investments will augment UVic’s world class research in clean energy, particle physics, climate science and ocean observation. New infrastructure acquired with this funding will accelerate advancements in these areas, equipping UVic researchers to broaden their impact as global leaders in their field."

The Hon. Mèlanie Joly (Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions) said, "Canada is focused on investing in researchers and innovators to advance bold scientific breakthroughs as we build the kind of scientific and academic powerhouse that drives the strongest economy in the G7. This investment through the Canada Foundation for Innovation will equip researchers with cutting-edge, world class facilities that strengthen Canada’s research infrastructure, accelerate discoveries, drive researchers to take their work to the next level and create new opportunities that will benefit Canadians across industries."

By supporting state-of-the-art labs and equipment, this funding will foster collaboration, attract and train the next generation of talent and accelerate the commercialization of solutions that delivers real benefits for Canadians."

This innovation competition for funds is generally held every two years to support research programs in natural sciences and engineering, health, social sciences, humanities and the arts, as well as interdisciplinary research. The funds released via CFI covers upto 40% of cost of infrastructure involved in the research projects.
