Canadians to receive a Temporary Excise Tax Relief During Middle East Conflict
Government of Canada (Department of Finance) (April 14, 2026): Government of Canada has showed signs to take action against rising fuel prices effecting pockets of Canadians. Through a Tempoary amendment (Short-Term) in Excise Tax Act, Department of Finance is hoping to suspend the fuel excise tax on gasoline, diesel and unleaded aviation fuels by setting the rates to Zero cents per litre, effective April 20, 2026 (Labour Day) uptil September 7, 2026. The three month relief is in direct correlation to the fuel price pressure caused by the global oil disruptions to the Middle East Conflict (Iran War).
To the date, Canadians pay 10 cents per litre of tax on regular gasoline and unleaded aviation fuel as well as 4 cents on diesel and aviation fuel. The direct impact will be seen on the Canadian industries across the board everywhere especially trucking, agriculture, food and restaurants, retail, construction and more. More than ever, this decision can turn out to crucial as the global conflicted war of Iran is shapping the Oil industry throughout the world.

As we build, we’re cutting your taxes, reducing the costs of your homes, and providing you relief at the pump. We cannot control what other nations do. We’re focused on what we can control – building Canada strong for all."

By lowering fuel costs at the pump on gasoline and diesel, we’re taking a concrete step to support Canadians through these challenges, as we position them for long-term success – by building the strongest economy in the G7."
Government of Canada outlines that this excise tax suspension will not only cut the taxes on gas stations but also fuel tax charges manufacturer and/or producer to purchaser and licensced wholesaler or Importer in Canada. Canadian governments estimated Tax Relief support essentially be touching $2.4 billion dollar mark during this period.
