Canada Revenue Agency To Close It's Drop Boxes After 2026 Tax Filing Season.

Canada Revenue Agency (March 19, 2026) (Ottawa, Ontario): CRA annouced its going to permanently shut drop boxes at 45 location across Canada on May 29, 2026 after the closure of Tax Filing Season. The change is taking effect after the tax season is over to minimize the inconvenience to tax payers. Canada Revenue Agency has shared declining use of drop boxes by 78% over the years as major reason to STOP this service. The recorded data suggests from 2018 to 2025 the tax payers using drop boxes declined from 2 million to 430,000. Along with significant decline processing delays/longer wait times and security concerns such as vandalism, break-ins and the handling of suspicious package by employees were also the reasons to stop this service for Canadian Tax Payers. 


The Revenue agency will now be accepting the tax document only via Online Submissions (Electronic Payments) & Regular Mail (In-person Payments at Canada Post Offices). 

The Important Dates highlighted in the News release by CRA are:
  • Tax Filing Deadline: April 30, 2026
  • Signage for Closure of Drop Boxes will be Posted on: May 1, 2026
  • Drop Box Closure: May 29, 2026
